When traveling by air, Yvonne Jacquette prefers a window seat. She uses this vantage point to make sketches of aerial views, which form the bases of her paintings. For this work, the artist made a composite image, incorporating shifts in scale and other slight dislocations, from numerous studies of the New York-Newark metropolitan area. The eye follows the wing into the deeper, dreamier space below, allowing the viewer to experience the mesmerizing, disorienting view air travelers have. This elevated perspective poetically demonstrates how distance can order and purify a city's material decay and social ills.
